Last week freelance writer Liz Ohanesian came into our Journalism 310 class and talked about her career as a journalist and gave us a few tips before we enter the real world. I think she gave great advice on what to expect once we get out there looking for a job.

With graduation day coming closer many students around California State University, Northridge are starting to worry about their future and not having an internship or job right out of college. However, many people do not know about the career center and the resources they offer to the many graduating students of CSUN.
“I didn’t know what kind of internship I wanted until I went down to the career center and met with someone,” said Michael Callahan, a journalism student at CSUN. “I found an internship at Fox Sports through the career center.
“They also went over my resume and helped me edit it so I could send it over to them,” said Callahan.
If you are new to the career center and looking for an internship, these six steps should help you find what you’re looking for.
1) Visit the Web site: http://www.csun.edu/career/
2) Look at the many brochures and read over the internship information and opportunities
3) Find and meet with a Peer Educator
4) Go over couple of career options with them
5) Make a Resume
6) Send it out
The career center is a great place for students who feel lost about their future and are worried about not finding an internship or a job.
Many internships turn into jobs if the intern commits to his/her work and shows a positive attitude around the office.
“After interning at Fox Sports for about six months my internship turned into a full-time job,” said Callahan. “I feel like I’m making a decent amount of money for a college student, and I think it will increase once I graduate.”
The career center also provides work shops and puts on special events such as job fairs and graduate school fairs where students can go out on campus and meet with potential employers or learn about graduate schools they may want to attend.
